Each night, I got out my guitar and sang to my family, making the best of the time we had together, cherishing each moment with Troy. The pine and horse smell of him couldnât drown out my restless thoughts, but his kisses kept them at bay.
One afternoon, as Brendan and Julia napped, Troy brought me out to the field and took my hands. âTalk to me,â he said. âI can feel your discontent.â
âItâs not because of you.â My words tumbled out in my need to reassure him.
He leaned in to give me a kiss. âGood. But maybe if you tell me whatâs on your mind, I can help.â
Leaves whispered in the trees, birds and insects singing with the breeze, a subtle soundtrack to my indecision. âI feel like I have to become a vigilante to make the kind of changes my old world needs.â
My confession made him flinch. No surprise, considering his past.
âItâs a hard road,â he admitted. âI donât recommend it, but sometimes thereâs no justice any other way.â He didnât pull back or shrink from me, which said more about our love and his courage than anything. Even as I reminded him of the killing heâd done, knowing it haunted him, he held me with his eyes, nothing but respect in his gaze.
âI donât know if itâs my job to dole out justice.â My voice cracked. I cleared my throat and took a breath to calm myself. âThe gods trained me to fight, and to heal. They taught me the need to seek peace, to use my influence without anger. And I want to helpâI do. But I canât think of the people at the top of the power pyramids without rage rising inside. I donât see a way to reason with them, a way to effectively change the world without going on a killing spree or emptying their bank accounts. Or both.â
I choked on my honesty, eyes stinging.
Troy pulled me in, wrapping me with silence and saturating me with love through the bond we shared. It wasnât his way to tell me what to do. He held space, this man.
How I cherished that.
Not that I didnât need advice. I did. Desperately. But he didnât have the answers I needed. He gave me what he had: reassurance. Deep love that reached my soul.
I tipped my head up, tears on my cheeks, my mouth seeking his. Losing myself in him. Love was easy. If I stayed firmly in the moment, immersed in the wonderous current of us, I didnât worry.
Troy couldnât save me from the future, but he saved me in that moment.
He was everything I needed.
